  16. It seems to be the season of the 'slow startup' question again!

  18. Having raised the issue some time ago over the net, and having received
  19. a very comprehensive explanation from Karl (thanks again, Karl), 
  20. I am left with one query :

  23. What is so desirable about subdirectory searching, given that you have to
  24. massage those directories to comply with the need that files must only occur 
  25. in leaf directories?

  28. At our installation, we have all fonts and inputs in hierarchies, 
  29. but TeX searches in flat directories containing symlinks (from all I gather,
  30. this is quite a common setup, noting for example Pierre MacKay's most
  31. recent posting here; I just don't see the merit of having subtree
  32. searches *in addition* to that). Our systems programmer has written perl scripts 
  33. which create all those links recursively (and remove dangling links in case
  34. file subtrees are removed), all based on filename extensions.
  35. The recursive directories do not change all that frequently, and when a new
  36. set of fonts or input files is installed, it takes only seconds to 
  37. create the additional links.

  39. We documented our installation in a (long) post on comp.text.tex,
  40. in May, I think.

  42. I am not a UNIX guru, but would appreciate enlightenment on this question.
